19 year old Kate Brunotts and 23 year old River Hooks are on the rise in NYC. Today we’re happy to premiere a song from these to up-and-comers called “HUGSRDRUGS” – streaming below! Before you check it out, get to know these two in their own words:
River: Heyyy! My name is River Hooks and I’m 23 years old. I put out my first single on my birthday last summer with this lovely blog your reading from in July called “Worth It”, thanks so much, GroundSounds! I wrote the song in hopes that someone would stumble upon it and see my “worth”, but also to give me a chance at taking on a dream that I’ve had since I could talk – being a musician.
I’ve been living in NYC for six years and I’m learning who I am and where I want to be in life through all things I’ve experienced and people that I’ve met. I’ve been producing for two and a half years and am ready to show the world what I can do. I’m currently working on music for an EP, which has been super fun and exhausting with having adult priorities, but I would love to get it out in 2019 or early 2020. Kate and I have recently talked about joining forces on this music journey and collaborating on the instrumentals for my forthcoming EP. She’s definitely someone to watch and I’m all about the support of female producers, so I’d love to share my first EP with her name in the credits. In an industry full of men, a lot of people don’t care or believe women can be just as good at making their own music, so it’s becoming my mission to exploit what females can do and spread the energy out into the world globally.
Kate: Hi! My name is Kate and I am 19 years old. I just moved to NYC about a year ago to pursue a career in music, as both a performer and producer. I met the oh-so lovely River Hooks on bumble business (go figure). I very much see her as both a mentor, collaborator, and friend, and I am so happy our paths crossed because she is so bound for greatness! It’s so rare to come across another female producer, so it’s been a blessing to have her in my circle.
As for myself, I’ve only been producing for about 3 years, but music in general has always been a constant throughout my life. I’m not always optimistic about my future within the industry, but I do know that I love creating/connecting with others using songs as my medium, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. I released my first EP, “Grounded”, the summer of 2018, and I recently released my second one, “Lust Songs” in February, premiered by Electronic Groove. Everything I create is entirely self produced, and I challenge myself to create a completed demo track every single week. I’m currently in the process of tracking my third EP “Digiluv” set to debut early Fall.

“For an official release on 4/20, it seems only appropriate to talk about the most common drug among us- Love and intense attraction. It’s super fascinating how apt we are to go into pure madness for another person. HUGSRDRUGS is about the complete submission to the biological changes love comes with and the sacrifices that come with it.”
