Hamilton Alt-Folk Project, Madam Sad, Accepts Loss of Love on “Hope For You”

Madam Sad started as a folk project between Maddison Schreiber (they/he) and Evelyn Charlotte Joe (they/them). Six years ago, Maddison felt pushed to be a musician out of love and spite, which to this day continues to follow into their art. Maddison and Evelyn spent around two years working on this upcoming album, through which they both suffered from poverty and flare ups with disability. With the colonial state of the world, post capitalism and economic failure, many artists are going through heart-wrenching measures to make the most simplest of results, and that’s something they experienced too.

Their song, “Hope For You,” has two parts, both inspired by love for different people. A feeling of rejection and loss for something that was never real, a sort of limerence.

“The song title is a way of holding myself accountable to make sure I am always hoping for the happiness of those who have hurt me,” says Maddison. “I also do get to a more genuine place where I feel compersion for an ex-lover’s success, and that’s a nice kind of sad.”

1. What did you enjoy most about the recording process of this new release?
Working with evelyn charlotte-joe fraser coyne. Evelyn is a very special person to me and making music with someone you get along with well can be magical, which is a very new realization for me. Combining the highs of extraordinary sounds and artistic emotions, with the rush that comes from a good community pairing, is super cool stuff.

2. Share a nugget of advice that has resonated with you most over the years.
Create within your limits, because your barriers will be what sets your art apart from everything else. Dont just think outside the box, but also have your own box that no one else could ever enter.

3. Who would be your dream artist/band to co-headline a tour with?
The Band 100%.

4. What sets your music apart from others in your genre?
I’m not too sure, I dont think I’m really doing anything that hasnt been done. I really pride myself off of having song layouts that keep things fresh. I’m committed to production being bare bones and sparce. Empty. Real and honest.

5. Tell us what your favourite song is at the moment and why.
Relistening to my summer 2023 playlist, I’m re-obsessing over current joys “fear”. I’m a big fan of current joys and of surf curse, what isnt there to say. I love the repitition, I love the vocal stylings of nick rattigan, this song rises and falls at the perfect times. Its very hypnotic and it puts my body in a really beautiful time in space.
