Today, Australian-born, New York-based vocalist and composer Alyson Murray shares “Small Steps,” the latest single from her forthcoming EP, The AM Session, due out later this month. Stream it below ahead of tomorrow’s digital release date.
The ballad-inspired track features Murray’s vocals soaring above stripped-back instrumentation, with bassist Luca Soul Rosenfeld and pianist Kelly Green brilliantly accentuating the singer’s slow dive into a new love. The result is an intimate, raw performance of one of the most tender tracks from the forthcoming EP.
“On the surface this track is a love song, but it’s much deeper than that,” explains Murray. “‘Small Steps’ is about respecting and loving the process, through all aspects of growth.”
The concept of the accompanying music video, which provides an insight into Murray’s live capabilities as a vocalist, was inspired by a lyric from the song: ‘When you plant the seeds, it takes nurturing and time.’
Murray is an accomplished performer. The release of her debut record, Breathe, in 2018 saw the singer-songwriter debut internationally, receiving airplay in Australia, London, Canada, and the U.S. During the 2018 Melbourne Jazz Festival, Murray curated a sold-out show, “Sassy: a Tribute to Sarah Vaughan,” which took place at the renowned venue, Paris Cat Jazz Club, and featured acclaimed saxophonist Marcus Strickland. Following the warm initial reception of Breathe, 2019 saw Murray perform at the Melbourne Recital Centre for International Women’s Day. Murray then took the performance of “Sassy” abroad, performing at Minton’s Playhouse in Harlem and at Diese Onze in Montreal.
