Band You Kneed To Know: Memory Tapes

Latest posts by Ziggy Williamson (see all)
Back in 2008, there was a blog, and in that blog contained mysterious mixes of electronic and dance-pop music. The blog was called Weird Tapes and the producer of the “weird tapes” was Dayve Hawk, a new producer and one of the first purveyors of the up and coming Chillwave sub-genre. After a string of free releases via his blog, he released Seek Magic, setting hype machines on the internet ablaze and the demand for his physical presence presented itself. He first toured in the U.S. in 2009 with The Atlas Sound to big, often sold out rooms and his first pressing of the vinyl release very quickly needed to be repressed.

Now, 2 years later, many Chillwave artists are releasing their sophmore releases and solidifying their genre, not as a novelty or a fad, but as a viable wealth of creativity. Memory Tapes’ newest album, Player Piano, out on Carpark Records, expands on his previous efforts lacing his synth-y production and samples, this time with live drums, more guitar and a more moving and present live bass.  Unfortunately, they just finished up with the summer tour, but be sure to check out their blog, http://www.weirdtapes/blogspot.com for any up and coming info.
