I didnt have $300 dollars for a weekend pass to Coachella, let alone money for a campsite or hotel. But last Saturday I still had an amazing music festival experience courtesy of cARTels third annual Brokechella.
Held at Six01 Studios in Downtown Los Angeles, Brokechella was like a miniature one-day Coachella. For only $10, you got three stages of amazing music.
Inside the open warehouse was the Shifty Rhythms Stage, with a dynamic range of electronic artists, remixers, and DJs. Out on the loading doc area was the Brownies & Lemonade stage that featured some of the illest up and coming MCs in the area. A short stroll past the funky art displays and food trucks that served tasty snacks was the Cartel Stage, which featured a variety of acts including pop, rock, and electronic music.
Running from 4p.m. until sometime after 1a.m., there was a constant flow of sights, sounds, and smells, (it was 4/20) which made the whole festival totally worth it. After watching a few acts on the Hip-hop stage, we interviewed Tyran Brown and asked him about the response to his latest mixtape, #HardWork. After taking some B-roll near the EDM stage, I grabbed a deliciously messy hamburger from the Tabom Truck, a Brazilian-themed food truck.
We got back on the grind and caught up with the band Body Parts, who told us some fun facts about everyone in the band. Next up we spoke with the DJ/Remix duo Vindata, who informed us about their remixes and a new project of all original material. The duo yOya spoke with Ground Sounds about touring up and down the west coast while Mystery Skulls told us about what his #GrindTime is when he isnt making sick beats. After catching a few more sets, we caught up with rapper Mann, who told us all about his new EP, LISA, and his hit single Buzzin.
Brokechella was probably the best $10 music junkies like us at GroundSounds could spend the weekend. It was a fun time even though we were on #GrindTime. Be sure to stay tuned for our exclusive interviews and footage from Brokechella 2013.
