Featuring 45 acts in four days, the 15th Annual Nelsonville Music Festival took place June 6-9 on the campus of Hocking College. Headliners included Death Cab for Cutie, Mavis Staples, Tyler Childers, the Breeders and Thee Oh Sees.
The Nelsonville Music Festival is known as a unique experience and there are several reasons why.
You get to see performances in an intimate setting
The festival is small enough where you can see your favorite bands up close and personal. With a main stage, porch stage, the No-Fi Cabin, the Gladden House and a free boxcar stage, there are a variety of intimate settings.

It’s family friendly
At NMF, you will see many families walking around and enjoying the festival. NMF includes a kids area where the younger audience can experience myriad activities, such as sign-making, painting, the opportunity to play more than 100 instruments, building a survival shelter, songwriting, dancing and many other art activities.
NMF includes a family camping area, where quiet hours begin at 10 pm.
It has a skate ramp
For the second year in a row, NMF included a mini skate ramp, where they offered lessons, open skate sessions, and professional demos. The D-Rays also played on the skate ramp!
It also included a ramp canvas where kids could paint and an on-site silk screening, where children and adults could make their own t-shirts.
It’s sustainable
NMF has been recognized by Outdoor Nation as one of the top 6 sustainable festivals in the country. This is because of its zero waste efforts. In 2018, it recycled and composted more than 92% of all waste discarded at the festival. When you arrive to the festival, volunteers give you a bag for your recyclables that you deliver to the waste station. Volunteers then sort through the recycled materials.
It features art
It is obvious that NMF features art in all forms. Partnering with local artists, you can see art throughout the festival, including installations like the NMF letters you first see when you enter the festival, murals, balloon projects, posters and shirts.
It features late night acts
If you haven’t had enough after the last act on the main festival grounds, head over to the campground stage tent, where bands start playing at midnight until early hours in the morning.
Parts of the festival are free
The NMF Boxcar Stage, which featured live music from more than 15 acts, vendors, food, beer, and a mini skate ramp, was open to the public all weekend long.
It features musicians of all ages and genres
From local artists, such as Chris Biester, The Cordial Sins, Water Witches, The D-Rays, to national acts such as Death Cab for Cutie, the Breeders and Thee Oh Sees, the festival has something for everyone.
