For NYC-based artist Alan Chapell, creating and expanding his musical palette has been a lifetime affair. It’s his work in the tech sector, however, that has gone on to inspire his latest work recording under his last name.
His forthcoming LP, Penultimate, explores themes dealing with the continuing fall-out from the start of the internet age informed by his experiences advising tech companies on privacy issues. The album’s latest single, “I Am Zuck,” takes aim at the Facebook-founder as Chapell’s voice and the sonic atmosphere evokes early R.E.M.
Reflecting on Penultimate, Chapell offers; “I feel like I’m discovering myself as an artist in a way I never could have earlier in my life. For too long, I bought into the notion that I couldn’t become a successful artist after age 30 – and it was liberating to recognize how foolish that was. The most invigorating thing is that I don’t feel I’ve written my best song yet.”
