LA-based artist Misty Boyce is gearing up to release her new album Get Lost on Feb 16. Get Lost is a honest exploration of the Boyce’s life, tackling everything from her Evangelical upbringing to her stepfather’s suicide. The nine track collection is rooted in atmospheric indie-folk which Boyce deftly blends with ethereal dreampop and chamber pop, her hypnotizing vocals remaining front and center throughout. We are excited to premiere the track “Can’t Say Goodbye” today. The song immediately strikes a serious tone and draws the listener into every word, continuing to unfold with flourishing builds. We could gush about the beautiful track, but Misty can provide all the insight you need:
“Can’t Say Goodbye” was written at a time when I was freshly alone in a new apartment in LA after a long stint of being on tour with Sara Bareilles. We had just been in Australia, Tokyo, New Zealand, and Singapore, where I’d been given the opportunity to open for her as well as play in her stripped-down backing band, and I was riding high. However, it was in Sydney that I got the news that my step-brother had passed of an opiate overdose. So I found myself, at once, in the most beautiful place on the planet, with all of my dreams coming true, and in hell with the knowledge that at home my family was destroyed.
I was able to finish out the tour and make it to the funeral, through some kind of real grace, and once I was back to LA, where the dust settled, I was utterly and desperately alone. My favorite job I’d ever had was over, along with the time spent with some of my best friends. I went through a break-up, and was un-packing a very complicated death and overall family dynamic. So I tried my hardest to just throw myself into a lot of writing and reading, specifically Rilke’s Letters To A Young Poet. A passage in one of the letters got me ruminating about the way specific details can serve to depict broad emotions better than describing the broad emotions themselves. So I tried to focus on smaller things in daily life, like a cup of tea, to keep going, day by day, and to find a way to let people in to my world.
