Paris-based, indie, singer-songwriter, Pamela Hute is gearing up for the release of her forthcoming EP, Today, set to release September 16, 2016.  The project was written and produced solely by the songstress herself and features the fresh new track “Banshees,” Hute’s first introduction to the United States! The single surges with an invigorating feeling that rock’s out with a fresh pop hook.

GroundSounds recently caught up with Pamela to talk about her latest track, forthcoming EP and more, check out the exclusive interview below.

For those just discovering Pamela Hute, can you tell us about your upbringing and how you got started with music?

I had a pretty formal education, I studied literature and have a master at Science Po Paris; I was not exactly formatted for rock and roll! But it has always been in me and I started playing guitar and writing songs at 12. I was a lonely child with no brothers and sisters, so I had to invent thing to keep busy. I spent a lot of time recordings fake radio shows, singing over records, and listening to The Beatles with my walkman. And eventually I started writing my own songs. It was and still is the way I express myself best.

What do you enjoy most about living in Paris?

Paris is probably one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I always lived there and for me all that beauty is natural, but there is clearly a creative spirit in Paris. The Parisian rhythm is not as hectic as it may be in New York, which is probably my favorite city in the world, but there is a certain energy I like. It’s an inspiring city, no doubt about that.

Can you tell us about the writing and creative process involved with your fresh new track “Banshees?”

I wrote Banshees with a friend, Delphine (aka Barbara Wolf), who also plays bass and sings backing vocals on the upcoming EP and album. I usually never write with other people, but it happened this time, and in a very natural way. We spent 3 days isolated in the country figuring out the song. The atmosphere was eerie, but in a mellow-kind of way, and this is how I came up with the lyrics. It’s a special song, it’s different from all the stuff I made so far.

This EP embodies a new phase in my life as an artist. My record label dumped me after releasing my first two albums; I was in a strange moment where I was not sure whether I had the energy to continue writing and making records without support. But I had a lot of things to say, and many songs in me. So I wrote and decided I should produce it alone. I set up a new band, looked for a different sound and this is how it happened. It’s a different process, I was really in the center of it and I think it’s my most personal work.

What made you decide on the EP name ‘Today?’

As I said, this records embodies a change and something more personal. A new start maybe, or at least a different path. I liked the word ‘today’ as the expression of a starting point.

Can you tell us a little bit about your record label My Dear Recordings?

I’ve been doing music for ten years and I was lucky to be signed pretty early in order to release my first album in great circumstances. It didn’t work out as expected and after the second album, my label and I thought it was time for a change. It took me a while to decide to create my own label. I had this idea in my head for a while but I didn’t want to start such adventure on my own. I met Julien le Nagard, a musician and now friend, a few months ago and we really shared the same vision of the business and were both at a point in our careers where we wanted to control our artistic ideals better and help other bands grow by sharing our vision and experience. It was obvious we had to start this record label together. And so we did.

I tend to think people are getting tired of music as a business-only thing, with all those over-marketed bands that are selling songs with no soul. I feel people seek more authenticity nowadays and are willing to support bands and labels that express something more genuine.

I’m extremely proud to release my record on this label we founded, it makes so much sense and there is a lot of interest around it which is very exciting.

As a vinyl collector, what is one of the most favorite records in your collection?

Hard to say. I have a lot of original records and so many I love. I’m a huge Stax fan. Otis Redding is probably my favorite singer ever and I almost have all of his releases on Stax. I’m kinda proud of that I guess!

What is it about synth-pop and guitar rock that attracts you to this sound?

The new EP is not so synth-oriented, it’s more about the songs. I’m not focused on a specific sound, I always try to give the songs the best arrangement possible and keyboards can be very moody and helpful. Regarding guitars, I’m a guitar person for sure. Most of my music education happened in the 90s with brit pop (Elastica, Blur) and Nirvana, and I had this taste for jangling guitars ever since. I can’t help it!

What musicians/bands are you currently listening to?

I’ve been listening to Chris Staples latest release on ‘Barsuk’ which is great, Ultimate Painting a lot, and Grandaddy’s latest single which is so heartwarming. Cymbals Eat Guitars’ new ‘Pretty Years’, WIlco’s ‘Schmico’, and Houndstooth’s latest release. A lot of My Thinking Face too, a band I signed on my label, french guys with huge beards writing killer songs. Their first EP ‘Holy’ is all acoustic and it’s really beautiful.

It seems like a pretty exciting time for indie rock if you know where to look.

After the EP release what’s next for Pamela Hute? What can fans look forward to?

The EP ‘Today’ is the introduction to the release of a full length due end of February 2017. It’s my third record and it will be called ‘Highline’. We will be touring over Europe and maybe the States later in the year. I would love that, I miss America so bad!
