LA-based pop/soul artist Alma is gearing up to release The Travel Size EP in 2016. Today we’re thrilled to premiere her new single “Oh, K.” The track pops and bursts with energy and is sure to put you in a good mood. The origins of “Oh, K” aren’t all sunshine though, as Alma explains:
I’ve never been a fan of vengeful songs, ones where the writer complains that someone did them wrong and that they hope karma comes back for them. So in “Oh, K”—a song that comes uncomfortably close to badmouthing a former colleague—I had to be careful to avoid painting a one-sided picture. Even though the song talks about how this person only values our friendship insofar as it benefits them, “Oh, K” is less about how terrible they are and more about how I’m asserting myself and drawing the line; it’s basically saying, “Hey, I see what you’re doing, I tried being kind to you in spite of it, but I’m not going to let you take advantage of me like this.”
I wrote the song about a year ago and recorded it in Chicago a couple months later. Guitarist/bassist Michael Hecker supplied the backing music, and for the percussion we recorded and looped a lot of noises—clapping (obviously), stomping, shaker, and many other organic sounds.
