Brooklyn & Sheffield UK prog/folk/noise 4-piece Frogbelly and Symphony have just dropped the fresh new track “Minderbinder.” Premiering exclusively on GroundSounds, the single is from their forthcoming debut full-length Blue Bright Ow Sleep. “Minderbinder” is an ode to Joseph Heller’s Catch 22 war profiteer anti-hero Milo Minderbinder and it is dedicated to the opportunistic existentialist punk in all of us.
Frontman Tom Hanley had this to say about the song’s origins:
Last year I got a little obsessed with Catch 22, probably my personal favourite book ever, and I’m really grateful I got to read it. I read it back and forth, inside out, and it took me a full year to be able to put it aside again. I feel very connected with what Joseph Heller achieved with that book. It’s a stunning piece of work. Milo isn’t the main character but in the way Heller describes his personality, Minderbinder perfectly represents the opportunist existentialist punk who lives in all of us, striving for the unjustifiable, self centered, ambiguous success. Or is he the only sane personality to honestly see through this time and life? He is the timeless, fictional anti-hero of taking the advantage. With a conscience…Interestingly, Ben and Liz wrote most of the lyrics to this song – both of them never read the book! It’s already an interpretation of an interpretation and, thus for me, a little epiphany to the blessedness of being in a rock band.
Blue Bright Ow Sleep was developed by the band as they played 100+ shows in Europe, UK and US. The debut album will be available in the U.S. on CD, vinyl and digital formats through Labelship UK on March 24th. Stream “Minderbinder” below!
