Scranton, PA alt-rockers Esta Coda are set to release their debut EP Kindness on April 12. The EP consists of five addicting tracks that any alt/indie fan will enjoy. If you’re just hearing about Esta Coda for the first time, imagine a crisp and confident mixture of Jimmy Eat World, So Long, Astoria era The Ataris, Augustana, and Socratic. If that doesn’t get you excited, I don’t know what will. Those are four bands I really enjoy, so it’s no surprise I love this EP.

“Kindness” opens with a flourish—a strong hook and the musicianship of a band way beyond EC’s years. “Skeptic” follows with one of the most memorable lines: “You’re walking in fire, doesn’t it hurt?” You’ll have that line in your head long after the song ends.

The slower “All You Got” is reminiscent of a classic early 2000’s acoustic ballad and provides a nice tempo change. “Fireworks,” the first song the band released and the EP closer, demonstrates why this band will become a force in today’s music scene. The track has its own distinct vibe, with a sort of Goo Goo Dolls-meets-Augustana ‘hit single’ quality to it. A signature vocal performance, memorable hook, and impossible to deny songwriting chops could (and should) catapult “Fireworks” into one of the best and most played songs of 2014.

EP’s, especially debut EP’s, are most often a tease—a brief taste of what’s to come. If Kindness is any indication, I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Esta Coda. These five tracks are miles ahead of what most bands create when debuting their first studio creations. The future is bright for these guys from PA and I’m excited to watch them grow and evolve. Be sure to pick up the EP on April 12th and enjoy that privileged, yet fleeting feeling of being present at the start of it all.
