Interview with Gold Fields

Jon Berrien

Aussie collective Gold Fields have been on the grind! After recording their debut album Black Sun three times they were finally satisfied, and that satisfaction has paid off. The band from Ballarat has created quite the buzz, they are currently on their North American tour spreading the good word. GroundSounds had the opportunity to catch up with frontman Mark Robert Fuller, check out our exclusive interview below.

For those just discovering Gold Fields, how did you guys meet?

We all went to school together except for Ryan, who we met while we were in high school. We’ve all been mates for nearly ten years.

You guys are currently on the road for your North America Tour, how has it been? What cities have you enjoyed most?

It’s been great. It’s nice doing your own headline show and having great support bands and just being able to create the show we want. All the shows have been great so far. LA was definitely a highlight and all the shows in Texas were great.

What has been one of the most memorable moments from the tour thus far?

Probably the LA show I think… It’s a weird feeling having a room full of people come out to our show on the other side of the world but its definitely a good feeling.

Your debut album ‘Black Sun’ is awesome to say the least. What was it like working on the album? Can you tell us a little bit about the creative process involved with bringing it to fruition?

Yeah it was a big process.. It was a bit of a journey actually.. We recorded it three times, once in LA then again in Sydney in proper fancy studios, then we ended up recording it ourselves in my parents garage and thats where we got the album we wanted. We just feel more comfortable and creative working in the garage. It was a lengthy, sometimes stressful and exhausting process right up until we decided to do it ourselves… from then on we were good.

Being an Australian based band, what do you guys like and dislike most about America?

Dislike the majority of the food options, haha. A burger doesn’t go down too well after you’ve eaten one every day for a month. It’s hard to find healthy food when we’re touring but we’re starting to pick up a bit of an idea of where to go and where not to go. America is a lot like home in a lot of ways and we really like it here. The people are nice, there’s some beautiful places to see, there’s a lot of great bands around and at the moment, the weather is warm and it’s a good place to be.

What are you guys currently listening to?

All different stuff. I’ve been listening to a lot of Brian Jonestown!!! Cloud Control and stuff like that. I’ve pretty much listened to dance and electronic music for the past five years and now for some reason I’ve started to like the sound of guitars and live drums again.

If you guys could meet someone living or dead who would it be and why?

Ummmm that’s a really tough one. Maybe Sigmund Freud to pick his brain for a while. I’m really not sure. Maybe someone like Anthony Robbins would be good for me.

What other bands or musicians have heavily influenced your music?

A lot of Australian electronic stuff has. We were right into the whole Modular Records and stuff when we started going to clubs and shows. We listened to post punk stuff in high school and I still listen to a lot of pop music and commercial radio. I think the next album will be probably influenced by some totally different stuff to all that .

After you guys get off the road, what’s next? What will you guys be working on?

We’re heading home for some time off and to write some new music. We’ve pretty much been on tour for most of this year, we’ve played well over 100 shows so far this year so after this tour, we’ll sit at home for a bit and get ready start writing again, we’re really looking forward to that.
