Interview: Hamilton Artist Banman’s ‘Ups & Downs’ EP Explores Recovery Through Uplifting Hip-Hop, Highlighting “Didn’t See Me Coming”

Banman, a rising hip-hop artist from Hamilton, Ontario unveils his powerful new EP, Ups & Downs — a concept album designed to be experienced in sequence. The project chronicles Banman’s journey through addiction and recovery, offering raw, honest reflections wrapped in catchy beats and sharp lyricism.

The EP’s focus track, “Didn’t See Me Coming,” radiates an infectious, uplifting energy with an old-school West Coast vibe. The song embodies Banman’s vision of emerging from the shadows to make an undeniable impact, both personally and musically. Written six years ago, it finally finds its moment, recorded in just two hours with a flow that’s been honed through relentless practice.

1. What did you enjoy most about the recording process of this new release?
I was always shy to rap in front of people so it got me out of my comfort zone, allowed me to get a feel for how I actually sound on the microphone. I loved watching the songs come together.

2. Share a nugget of advice that has resonated with you most over the years.
Never give up on your dream. It doesn’t matter how long it takes. I’ve had my music on the back burner for the last decade, then when I had a life altering work accident I realized I never wanted to do anything other than music. Making that decision to put both feet in my passion for music,  is actually a massive reason why I found God.

3. Who would be your dream artist/band to co-headline a tour with?
It’s been my dream since day 1 to work with/collab with Dr. Dre and Eminem. They are the greatest in my opinion. They seem like great people and are also hilarious so to co-headline a tour with them would be absolutely insane. I would learn so much. I honestly dream of that moment every day.

4. What sets your music apart from others in your genre?
There’s a lot of great music out there but what I think sets my music apart from others in my genre is the  way that my lyrics are written, how I flow, and I’ve been getting lots of compliments on the beats because they are a unique “feel”. When people ask me “What kind of rap do you do?”, I find the easiest answer is “I’m a story teller”. My music is also a different sound than what you hear now a days.

 5. Tell us what your favourite song is at the moment and why.
Honestly my favourite song right now is one of my own, “What’s Best”. It’s on my “Ups & Downs” EP. It really demonstrates the change in my mental, physical and spiritual health. It shows the change from heavy drug addiction, to finding God and changing. When I listen to it, I’m reminded of how far I’ve come, and I feel pumped to keep moving forward.

If I were to choose a favourite song other than one of my own songs, then I would say “Not Afraid” by Eminem. Not only is it super catchy, but the lyrics are so powerful, and inspiring.  “Not Afraid” by Eminem is what inspired me to write my track, “What’s Best”.

These songs have taught me patience. I could’ve released them years ago, but I wasn’t ready. Now, it feels like the perfect time.Banman

Banman’s musical evolution reflects his personal growth. Inspired by his struggles with addiction and his transformative recovery journey, the EP showcases his resilience and dedication. The recording process was swift, thanks to years of preparation, with each track laid down in just a couple of hours. This meticulous practice shaped the confident, polished sound of Ups & Downs.
