Interview: Hamilton, ON’s Savelene Confronts the Complexity of Love and Loss on Tense, Alt-Metal Single “A New End”

Hamilton, ON rock group Savelene‘s new single, “A New End,” is a deep dive into the complexities of relationships and personal growth. Formed during the COVID-19 lockdowns, Savelene is the brainchild of Rich Sookrah (vocals) and Dallas Toni (guitars), who explore themes of fear, acceptance, and the bittersweet nature of endings. With their latest single, they confront the emotional tension that arises when relationships end and what comes after.

The song was inspired by the navigation of relationships—both past and present—and the lessons learned through them. “A New End” captures the simultaneous sense of loss and hope that comes with endings, layered over a unique blend of rock and alt-metal influences.

1. What did you enjoy most about the recording process of this new release?
How easy it was.  We recorded it ourselves and it came together rather quickly with very little change from what was originally written.  Recording ourselves allows us to work at our own pace and it’s a real bonus to have the tools ready and waiting for when inspiration strikes!

2. Share a nugget of advice that has resonated with you most over the years.
“Write the record you want to hear”.  Different artists have different motivations but we try to stick to this one as closely as possible.

3. Who would be your dream artist/band to co-headline a tour with?
deftones/Metallica/Faith No More4. What sets your music apart from others in your genre?
I think maybe attention to detail.  We’re really focused on the craft of songwriting, first and foremost as opposed to an image or putting ourselves in a box.

5. Tell us what your favourite song is at the moment and why.
It ebbs and flows but currently Fell On Black Days by Soundgarden.  As someone that enjoys the craft of song, it’s a really interesting song with the 7/8 time signature.  It’s an example of both complexity and simplicity at the same time.  A beautiful, melancholic song.

Each beginning comes from a new end. Sure, something ended, but that means we have an exciting new beginning.
Dallas Toni

With multiple time signatures and key changes, “A New End” stands out for its unique structure and the raw emotion it carries. Dallas and Rich blend tension and release, creating a track that feels both conflicted and relieved. The lyrics reflect on the complexities of relationships, showing that even in the end, there is growth and acceptance. The song also touches on the tension between longing and the realization that it’s okay to let go.
