Based in Toronto, ON by way of London, England, by way of Ile-Ife, Nigeria, artist and producer Seye Odebiyi uses his musical exposure from different countries to feed into his creative process.
“What I do not want to do is to sound like everything else.” Seye is looking to make his music reach and impact as many people as possible, as well as bring a smile, a dance and a lasting memory. “I love African percussion in my rhythms. So no matter the style, if you listen hard enough, you’ll hear some congas, bongos, and/or shakers.”
Familiar but fresh, “A Walk With You” is his soulful single with an old school R&B sound, transporting listeners to a special place with their special someone.
1. What did you enjoy most about the recording process of this new release?
I enjoyed experimenting with my vocals. I played around with lead and background vocals in terms of how they complement and support each other.
2. Share a nugget of advice that has resonated with you most over the years.
Believe in yourself. I still tell myself that every day. In this very wonderful and challenging creative industry, you have to believe that you have something special to contribute.
3. Who would be your dream artist/band to co-headline a tour with?
I like FKJ and Kaytranda. They are really creative with their sounds and music and would love to share the stage with them!
4. What sets your music apart from others in your genre?
I think of myself first as a producer so it is all about the sound and music. I like to play around with sounds in any genre that I am working on and see how I can make it sound fresh and different. I can never seem to get away from my african roots so you will almost always hear some traditional percussions in my music, no matter the genre!
5. Tell us what your favourite song is at the moment and why.
This will sound like a very strange answer but I think it speaks to my eclectic taste and just how far I dig when I am looking for inspiration. At the moment, it is a song called ‘Adios’, which has been covered by so many amazing artists but I am loving the Glenn Miller Orchestra version as well as the Xavier Cugat version. As a producer, I love how they both interpreted this song differently and brilliantly, and that inspires me to continue to innovate and create ‘different’ sounds!
