After the success of their last single ‘Monochrome’ in February 2020, fast-rising Montreal rock band The Unfound were about to embark on a string of summer headline tour dates, having just completed a 10-date Canadian tour the autumn before, supporting The Motorleague, Travis Cormier, and The Treble, when the whole world came to a standstill due to the global lockdown. The 4-piece band were grounded but not defeated and they have spent the last 18 months writing and recording new music to perform when they hit the road again in 2022 – the first of which has been released today, the anthemic jam ‘Down South’.
Produced by The Damn Truth drummer Dave Traina, who worked with The Unfound on ‘Monochrome’, and has also produced for the likes of We Are Monroe, Juno Award winner Jean Massicote, and Grammy Award winner Tchad Blake, ‘Down South’ is the band’s own take on the classic ‘driving’ rock song, and it makes for the perfect track to blast, whenever you’re on the move. Driven by infectious attention-grabbing guitar riffs throughout the track, boisterous drum arrangements and lead singer Benjamin Morris’ piercing vocals, the track speaks to being able to pick yourself up and start again, which will resonate with fans and critics alike, considering the impact that the global lockdown of last year has had on many of us.
Speaking about the inspiration for ‘Down South’, The Unfound say,
“The song is our take on the classic ‘driving’ rock song. The writing process started with Alberto’s riff, which immediately conjured up images of empty highways and hot sun, so the name ‘Down South’ followed quickly after. The song’s lyrics are about picking up and starting again, which is a bit of a rock n roll cliché but hey, it’s a great one! We all have songs that we love to blast when we’re on the move, and this is our contribution. Continuing with the theme from our very first video for ‘Sooner Or Later’, the animated video for ‘Down South’ is all about letting go, picking up and starting again, but the video also explores the obstacles in your journey to start again”.
Emerging in the past two years as an exciting prospect for Canadian rock music, The Unfound are an excellent tight-knit four piece, led by Benjamin Morris on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Alberto D’Onofrio on lead guitar, and brothers Matthew Grippo on bass and keyboard, and Jeremy Grippo on drums and percussion. Despite only forming in 2017, the band are already well revered and championed for their emotive, powerful, and driving rock and roll sound, which is reminiscent of legends such as Foo Fighters, The Killers, and Muse. Led by tracks like ‘Sooner Or Later’ and ‘Monochrome’, The Unfound have been winning over rock music fans across Canada, one explosive and hard-hitting live performance at a time.
