Texas alternative pop act southstate is out to correct the misconception that the Southern states are without culture and diversity. Led by the multiracial, multicultural Sam Ma, southstate was initially conceived to make music for those who felt out of place and didn’t fit perfectly into any of the boxes they are supposed to occupy.

Musically, southstate takes a dexterous approach to its art; nods to bedroom pop acts the likes of blackbear and Jeremy Zucker; emo titans such as Fall Out Boy and Grayscale as well as Asian acts Keshi and Joji.

Today we’re excited to premiere the new track “Fastcars” – streaming below! The track is SMOOTH. Really impressive musicianship and songwriting, with a killer hook. Enjoy!

In their own words:

“Fastcars has a lot of bedroom pop and soul influence. It has layered pop keys with clanky strat guitar tones, a lofi-esque bridge, and a jazzy af outro. I really tried to push through my musical walls to create something unique on this track, and I’m not sure you’ll find anything else quite like this.

Lyrically, it’s about reflecting on the relationships and friendships that helped shape you into the person you are today, and contrasting that slow personal growth with the rushed consumerism of our current internet culture. You know, cause most 20-somethings are stuck on Nikes and fast cars, but it’s really the relationships with people you care about that make you better. Probably.

I meeeeean, I’ll take a Nike sponsorship if they’re giving them out.”
