A Special Collaboration Creates ‘Dark Mark vs Skelton Joe’

As two artists collaborate they create something that may be completely unexpected such as a project like this. A project was born from mutual respect, and created ‘Dark Mark vs. Skeleton Joe’ which mines electronic music and unearths an experimental sound for both of them. A prolific artist and author, Mark Lanegan, from Screaming Trees, has collaborated with a host of bands and musicians, including UNKLE, Neko Case, The Duke Spirit and Queens of the Stone Age among many others. DM vs SJ marks a new band for Lanegan, not a guest spot or featured artist. The other half of this duo is the Icarus Line frontman Joe Cardamone, who was with the Icarus Line for 17 years, and is from Los Angeles.

The project is with a predilection toward the darker shade of music, DM vs SJ leans heavily into midnight rhythms, inciting strains of Tones on Tail, Bauhaus, and IAMX. A fitting introduction to the world of DM vs SJ, “Dark Mark Theme” swirls in minor chords with Lanegan’s vocals matching Cardamone’s electronics. “’Dark Mark Theme’ is one of my favorite tracks,” confesses Cardmone. “The lyrics are awesome and the instrumental component is just mean. Together, it all ended up as a powerful combination.”  Adds Lanegan, “I think of Manifesto as bizarro gospel music with Joe as Christ. The theme is just twisted perversity, or at least that’s what it was intended to be. I think it’s safe to say that we achieved it.”

“The fact that it’s not like anything either one of us have done before is what makes this so interesting for me,” explains Lanegan. “When you have done as much stuff as Joe and I, you have to constantly search for the different and challenging to keep yourself engaged.” With a predilection toward the darker shade of music, DMvsSJ leans heavily into midnight rhythms, inciting strains of Tones on Tail, Bauhaus, and IAMX. “I just wanted to make some instrumentals that I thought Mark’s voice would shine on, something hard with space for Mark to let go,” explains Joe Cardamone.

They also are planning on making more music as well as a full length album this fall of 2021. As for what Joe Cardamone thinks of the music to come, “Some little touches here and there still, but all in all we got a record on the way.” Until then, check out ‘Dark Mark vs Skeleton Joe’, and check out all of the duos social medias.
