Premiere on Groundsounds today is Willa Amai’s ‘Not A Soldier’ (Troy Nōka Remix). This is not Willa Amai’s first premiere on Groundsounds though. We got the chance to premiere her single, ‘December’, last December. Today, her single off of her upcoming debut album, I Can Go To Bed Whenever on June 4th, ‘Not A Soldier’ has been remixed by Troy Nōka. The remix seems to put an emphasis on Willa’s Lyrics compared to the original. Not that the original doesn’t have emphasis, the moods of each song is slightly different, but still show the same message that Willa was looking for.
Willa Amai on the remix, “The remix for “Not A Soldier” is, I think, important to understanding the song. Not because it conveys one specific emotion or message, but because it accentuates the real ambiguity this song is meant to promote. For me, “Not A Soldier” is about losing control in terms of romance and love, but I hope that all of my songs allow for difference of opinion and discourse in terms of their meaning. I want my songs to mean what you, as the listener, want the song to mean, and “Not A Soldier” is no different. The more militant and structured aspect of the remix takes a turn from the original in that it feels less like losing control and more like losing sanity, and I want people to notice not only this more mental version but the difference between it and the original song. The truth is I’ve never really had a remix for any of my own songs before, but going through this experience of releasing it has opened my eyes to a whole new type of world of songwriting.”
Both, Willa and Troy, performed live, separate acts, at Linda Perry’s Rock-N-Relief earlier this year. Linda Perry, lead singer of 4 Non Blondes, has been working with Willa Amai since she 12 years old. Mind you, that Willa is still only 17 years old and is working with Linda Perry as well as worked with Dolly Parton on ‘Here You Come Again’. In addition to working with two stars, Willa has preformed on Ellen, performed with Brandi Carlile, and perfomed on The Today Show.
