In this new addition of Ground Vision we look at the music videos from One Ok Rock (Renegades), Sub Urban (Cirque), Demi Lovato (Dancing With The Devil), and Lil Nas X (Montero). Some of my favorite music videos for the week.
Starting off with One Ok Rock this Japanese rock band brings in with their new song “Renegades”. In the music video it contains messages suggesting to current social issues like equality, and how the planet is left in disarray. The lyrics “For all of the lies and the burden that they put on us,
All of the times that they told us to just because, We gotta fight for our rights and the things we love now“. They’re referring to the previous generation constantly making the rules and changing them to fit their ideology when its us the following generation to keep fighting to get what we want as well.
Next we have Sub Urban bringing another visually entertaining music video (Cirque). When watching this video I felt that it takes the perspective of anyone who obtains unimaginable power. He used it to obtain money, notoriety, women, until he was attacked because of his power. It tells our most basic needs and desires. Along with the music it brings an eerie feeling but still awesome.
Following it is a true story by Demi Lovato with her song Dancing With The Devil. In this Video we get a look at the process Demi went through during her relapse to alcohol and drugs. Facing the criticism head on, she shows the progression from “a little red wine” to “a little white line”. Facing fame with an addiction, even though she tried to be clean, it only shows how hard and difficult addiction is. When watching this video I felt for her struggles and hope the strength and love shes getting now will be more than she will ever need.
Lastly we have Lil Nas X with the trending music video Montero (Call me by your name). Lil Nas directed and wrote the music video. Bringing in visuals which impressed me from the start, almost all rendering and characters are portrayed by Lil Nas X allowing him to show different styles/fashion he brings to the industry. In the video we get retellings of the temptations of the snake and the fall of lucifer from biblical stories. A lot of viewers found some offense/ and discomfort from the music video due to Lil Nas X riding a pole down to hell, twerking on the devil, etc. when visually and from a story stand point this video is ahead of its time.
