May Devun has been given a remarkable, multi-range voice that captures all the highs and lows life brings. Her new single, “Say The Words,” flies far above the crowded world below.
Devun is a progressive singer-songwriter whose style carries the listener on a dreamy ride into a compelling new place, whether that is the inner mind or outer space.
She’s a Los Angeles-based alternative pop and R and B songstress whose single “Say the Words” brings to mind a strong blend of soul and post-punk new wave. The new song is expected to be the first of a string of new releases and if she has a few more of these, Mary Devun will be a household name very soon.
In many aspects, Devun’s voice is similar to some of the greats in the world of melismatic style where singers like Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Christina Aguilera are able to squeeze an amazing number of notes into each measure.
“I use it strategically, so there’s emotional value in every note,” she said. “‘Say the Words’ is an introspective journey. It’s about acknowledging your truths – who you are, and where you’re going. You’re not a stepping stone, so free yourself, and don’t let others define you or your purpose.
Devun wrote “Say the Words,” and brought in composer Patrick Warren on strings, he has worked with Adele, Lana Del Ray, Taylor Swift and Sara Bareilles. On drums is Matt Chamberlain, who has worked with Pearl Jam, Fiona Apple and Chris Cornell on acoustic drums.
