‘Haunted House’ by Michelle Creber an Avant-Garde Tale of Surrender

By SHARON JENNINGS

In this day and age when many people are coming to face reality about a lot of “taboo” issues, mental health is a topic that is seeing the light of day.

No longer is mental illness being shoved away in a dark closet somewhere, and Michelle Creber addresses the subject in a clever video called “Haunted House.”  The song “Haunted House” is off Creber’s new album, On Display.

That friend who keeps complaining about something over and over who has “cried Wolf” one too many times. The person who says something is going on that doesn’t appear to be — are they liars or or are they paranoid? There’s a good chance there are underlying issues to these characteristics that more immature and inexperienced brush off with such classifications.

Though Creber is 20 years old, she has accomplished quite a lot in music and in film and TV. Odds are good she is aware of a few people who may have overcome challenges, or who are doing the work needed to cope with their challenges.

Haunted House lyrics:

You’re cryin’ “I’m all alone, there’s not a living sould who cares now”
But I am just down the hall of this haunted house and you love that
I can’t give up on you, despite the harm you do
A friend is not this worthless
Must be a ghost, hung in your puppet show
Sewn at the mouth, role of invisible
Illusions get attention …

“Haunted House” is a unique style. It’s not quite alternative, it’s not quite rock, but it has theatrical elements that gives the track an avant-garde/storyteller feel. There is more to the story and there’s a feeling that Creber has been down this road with friends before.

And regardless of issues or not, the perpetual question remains: How much of one’s self is there actually to give to anyone?
