Popular american rapper and songwriter Offset became a member of the eSports organization FaZe Clan as an investor as of August 15th, 2019.
Best known as a member of the popular rap trio Migos, Offset’s decision to invest in an eSports organization may come as a surprise to some, but he is far from the first rapper to invest in the gaming space. In 2018, Drake became the co-owner of 100 Thieves (an eSports team management group), and Lil’ Yachty also joined the ranks of FaZe clan.
Said Offset in a press release regarding his decision, “I love gaming and eSports is the future. These two facts make it only right that I be a part of the biggest esports organization with some of the best players in the world.”
Despite the optimism of many investors, others are wary of a financial bubble that may be forming around eSports in general. Kotaku, in a deep dive analysis, mentioned a similar eSports bubble that formed in the mid 2000’s, and Dan Runcie at Trapital makes the argument that perhaps rappers would be better off building their own teams, rather than investing in existing organizations.
Still, eSports fever is alive and well, and competitive gaming’s momentum appears to be steadily growing — even independently of investor involvement. As one unnamed source said in Kotaku’s aforementioned article, “Let’s say its a huge bubble and it’s gonna burst and all the money goes away tomorrow. Will people still play games? Fuck yeah they will. Will people still get together to compete? Fuck yeah they will. Will people watch? Fuck yeah they will! If there’s a bubble, let it pop, and let’s get back to a place of sustainability and build from there.”
