Sometimes it’s not about reinventing the wheel but finding new ways to push it forward. Musician/artist Alex Haas and bassist/producer Bill Laswell can certainly attest to this looking back on their work with legends like David Bowie, PIL, The Ramones, Prince, Brian Eno and MotorHead and the music that comprises their latest collaborative effort, Smoke & Glass.
As Haas recently said, “Nostalgia is in fashion at the moment, with a definite resurgence of interest in the 90’s. I never stopped liking that era.”
With that, Haas and Laswell take you an instrumental journey that evokes the aforementioned Bowie’s time experimenting with Trent Reznor, expanding further into a rhythmic, electronic alternate universe. New frontiers are explored as individual soundscapes and as a fuller cohesive whole as elements of acid jazz, trip-hop and more bubble up in the sonic stew. Grab your best headphones, turn the lights down low, sit back and let Haas and Lawell handle the rest here folks.
