Sometimes in your own artistry, you hit a wall with the process of it all and find inspiration in subverting someone else’s art. Think Picasso’s 58 different interpretations of Diego Velázquez’s “Las Meninas.”
Picasso may not have had access to a casio (but it’s kind of a fun sentence to say), so we have New York’s own Matt Meade of Spritzer here who recently reworked the music of Madonna. Groundsounds is happy to premiere his version of “Like a Virgin” today. Taking a minimalist approach, Meade speeds the classic hit up a bit and injects warbling keys and a breezy island vibe not unlike a streamlined Ween b-side.
Meade details; “I’m not really sure why I decided to record this song. I don’t particularly love Madonna, but one day I found myself making a samba version of her hit, ‘Like a Virgin,’ with Casio keyboard beats. I will never have any answer as to what drew me to recording an album of Madonna songs. I guess in hindsight, I got so bored and disgusted by the vanity involved with writing and releasing my own music that I decided to work with someone else’s music. I just did what felt right without questioning it. And viola — a fake samba version of Madonna songs that I think sound kinda cute and hilarious.”
Listen to Spritzer’s rendition of “Like a Virgin” below and look for their Madonna covers EP out later this week.
