Erich Mrak has created a timeless genre with the single “Navigate.” The song is appropriately named because with the help of this sensitive and insightful work, listeners can navigate through any rough seas and emerge unscathed.
Written by Mrak and produced by partner Bento, the Toronto natives put together a song that spans the ages. “Navigate” is the first of six singles to be released.
Today, “Navigate” may be considered mellow electronic hip hop, but the dreamy and haunting tones of the track are relevant to any era. It’s rare that with the technology today, a new song could be appropriate across a range of styles. If “Navigate,” were the soundtrack for movies from different decades, the featured storylines would probably have been very different from one another.

“Navigate” has such an other-worldly quality to it that if it had been played in the 1960s, it would have been a good soundtrack for a space exploration movie. There is a quality to the song that indicates a beginning, possibly of a journey into an unknown terrain.
In the hip 1970s, the song could have been the background track at an upscale sophisticated city party in a high rise because there is an understated opulence that went with swinging 1970s.
In the 1980s, “Navigate” may have been the last song of the wee hours in a bar in New York City, at the time the patrons were ready to head home. It has a relaxed and early morning rainy day in New York City-sound about it. In the fledgling tech takeover of the 1990s, “Navigate” it would have fit well in a matrix-type or fantastic voyage science fiction picture at the early stages of the trip, where discovery was on the horizon.
As for the turn of the millennium, the song presents itself as what it truly is: The first chapter in a six-chapter story, approaching slowly and methodically, forming the foundation and building from here. Let’s see where Mrak and Bento take the eager listener next.
