BlckBx is a band made primarily of members Maite Christi and Richard Wynne who started making music in 2017 in a black box studio. Their sound is best described as Indie Funk Carioca that is an alternative RnB/Pop type take on the Bailé Funk Genre coming out of Brazil. We are excited to premiere their new song “MGNTK” (pronounced magnetic) today on GroundSounds! The song truly embodies it’s name – it’s almost impossible not to like. Dual vocals and harmonies pair with an addicting vibe and a big hook. One listen and it becomes clear BlckBx are headed places.
We asked the duo about the new track and their writing process:
What inspired you to write MGNTK?
It would be so much easier pretend that it was about some college boyfriend/girlfriend or something else totally relatable, but unfortunately we’re going to have to keep it real.
We’ve had an incredible 9 months touring city to city, meeting fans old and new, and writing some songs that have become near and dear to our hearts. In spite of all that, we never actually planned any of this.
Magnetic was written in the midst of our own little crossroads. We had stumbled upon this formula; nothing structurally or musically contrived, just a solid understanding of our songwriting process and what gets us excited in the studio. We knew we could spend all day writing songs, and many of our first ones quickly found homes with other artists. But why give them all away? Especially when they mean something to us.
What was the writing and recording process like for this single?
One night, we had to make a decision. We realized we could either do demo vocals to our label friendly “pitch tracks” that might sit on a dusty ass seagate hard drive underneath a pile of tangled microphone cables until some other artist picks it up, or we could allow ourselves the time and energy to explore these songs, stand up on stage and take some responsibility for them; for better or for worse.
Even while we were writing the hook, we couldn’t stop thinking about playing it live. We felt pulled toward making a record together and it seemed natural… Kind of like a magnet in a cheesy way.
It was definitely the moment we granted ourselves permission to board the S.S. BlckBx and drink our own Kool Aid.
How do you feel you’ve progressed as a duo since releasing your first single HOME?
Home was written at a point where we didn’t really know what we wanted out of our music if that makes sense. We weren’t writing for BlckBx, or with any sort of parogative or pretense – which can be cool – but now we’re a bit more conscious and “expecting” with our writing. We have a direction that we want to go in, and we feel lucky for that.
Go see them live at The Study on May 9, tickets HERE. Stream “MGNTK” below and be sure to connect on socials for more!
