Today is a big day for the Los Angeles based singer-songwriter Kat McDowell. Her long-awaited album Ten is officially out, and we’re celebrating by sharing her brand-new music video “Just an Illusion.” The ocean-pop, feel-good track was written by McDowell, Richard Rudolph (A Tribe Called Quest, Minnie Riperton, Stevie Wonder), Servet Fidan, and the Grammy-nominated Adam Berg – who also produced the album.
McDowell explains how “Just an Illusion” came to be.
“Servet and I were paired up as part of a live songwriting game show called TopTune which is like a “Whose Line Is it Anyway?” for songwriters in Los Angeles,” McDowell explains. “Six songwriters were up on stage and our names got drawn from a hat putting us into pairs, and then a song title was drawn out of a hat and we were given seventeen minutes to go backstage and write the song. I then took the song (we created) to Richard Rudolph who is an awesome lyricist, and helped me change some of the lyrics (i.e. “Treasure you keep” became “power you seek,” and then Adam did a wonderful job of producing it!”
