There seems to be a ton of great new, inventive music coming out of the Bay Area, specifically Oakland, these days. Despite the rapidly changing landscape spurred by the ever looming monster that is big tech gentrification, Oakland remains known as one of the more inclusive and artistically diverse music scenes in the country.
Back in 2016, Groundsounds got to know a couple of acts bubbling up in the Bay, including the group Makeunder led by Hamilton Ulmer.
As detailed in our interview with Ulmer back in September, the band just recently released their NPR-hailed EP, Great Headless Blank, for the first time on vinyl. Following a remix of EP cut “What A Lovely Bandsaw!” by fellow Oakland musician Naytronix (Nate Brenner of tUnE-yArDs), Makeunder recently shared a new remix of “Inevitable Conclusion” by Akiyoshi Ehara of The Seshen.
The groove-heavy remix finds Ehara looking towards some key influencers as he explains, “The vocals really stood out to me on this tune as something that would be fun to play with. I found that in a weird way a lot of the vocal runs seemed to have a subtle 90’s R&B flavor, especially when pitched up or down, which started to inform some of the groove. I’ve been going back to Timbaland and Missy Elliot productions a lot as of late, so some of that stuttering and syncopation of the beat was probably due to that stuff being a little fresher in my memory.”
Ehara’s The Seshen, of which he serves as bassist and producer, recently dropped an excellent new LP as well, Flames & Figures, and will be touring throughout 2017.
