You can’t stop this trio! Ben Berger, Ryan McMahon and Ryan Rabin are Captain Cuts, the LA based multi-platinum selling production crew that breaks barriers with genre bending mashups and explosive DJ sets! From working on official remixes for Britney Spears and Imagine Dragons, to writing songs for artist’s like Walk The Moon (“Shut Up and Dance”), Grouplove (“Tongue Tied”) and Halsey, they are riders on the storm.

The guys recently signed as artists to Epic records and just released their first fresh single “Love Like We Used To.” GroundSounds recently caught up with Captain Cuts to talk about their latest track, musical inspirations and more, check out the exclusive interview below.

For those just discovering Captain Cuts, how did you three come together and start making music?

We met in LA in the 80’s. Just 3 single dudes trying to make it in the city. A few guitars + a couple of synths later, Captain Cuts was born.

What made you guys decide on the name Captain Cuts?

It was a joke name for a one-off remix of Colours by Grouplove. We wanted to be Captain Hooks but there was already a MySpace rapper. The remix ended up on the FIFA soundtrack — spelled Captain Cutz — and there was no turning back.

Can you tell us about the writing and creative process involved with “Love Like We Used To?”

We wrote the entire song over a 3 chord loop. Nateur is an unbelievable songwriter and after he sang a couple melodies, we thought it sounded like a classic Motown song. So we decided to write the lyrics about loving someone in all the antiquated ways of loving someone: LIKE WE USED TO!!

You guys are breaking genres in regards to your mash-ups and remixes, how do you all decide which artist and songs to work with?

We want to say yes to everything but we don’t have enough time! So we do what everyone does: flip a coin. Heads = yes. Tails = no.

Can you tell us about your explosive monthly Emo Nite DJ Sets?

“Explosive” is putting it mildly.  Pic of the venue after our last set below:
unnamedCongrats on recently signing to Epic Records, what did it feel like when you all made this official?

It’s like we’re in the shower and someone is repeatedly flushing the toilet.  Hot to cold to hot again with a huge rush of WHAT THE F— IS HAPPENING?!

What musicians/bands are you guys currently listening to?

Love Porter Robinson. Love the new Bruno Mars song “24k Magic”.  Snakehips Ft. Zayn “Cruel” is a jam.  ANY remix by Lenno, Young Bombs, and Hotel Garuda.

What’s next for Captain Cuts, what can fans look forward to?

Working on more music to follow up “Love Like We Used To”. We’re also trying to unload some of these yellow + orange Skittles that we have leftover. They are the worst.
