Patrick Krief has spent much of the past decade writing, touring, and recording with Montreal’s original orchestral rock-noir band, The Dears. However, he is now solo, working on his forthcoming unconventional and heart-wrenching diary of a double album, Automanic Red and Automatic Blue. Featured on the upcoming project is the track “All Is Lost,” the video is now premiering exclusively on GroundSounds.

Krief had this to say about his latest track:

“’All Is Lost” was a chord progression that came to me in the back of a touring van while rolling along the west coast of the United States. I tracked the chords on my lap top with a midi controller and programmed the beat really quickly. It was a recording I enjoyed listening to on loop for months, especially while in the van.  I’d listen and hear endless arrangements and melodies to sing over it and it was hypnotic to me. I think the first melody that came to me was the horn line. The guitar riff from the second verse was actually recorded in the van using the lap top microphone and a classical guitar. I ended up blending that guitar with a new one as the original source was too noisy but it added something special I couldn’t let go of. On a trip to Nevada, I sat at his piano and the song just finally snapped together after sitting in incubation for 2-3 years.

The lyrics touch on being held back by the past and the struggle/importance of moving forward.”
