Chicago based alternative quintet Commonweather recently dropped the fresh new EP Apparitions’. The six-track project is packed full of shoegaze-infused emo sonic goodness. The guys hit us with an exclusive inside look into the meanings and inspirations behind their latest tunes, check out the exclusive track-by-track only on GroundSounds below!

The Devil You Know

We wrote this song about the tribulations of addiction and it stands out as the most personal track to us. Over the past few years, we’ve watched close friends and family deteriorate from substance abuse. It’s really hard to watch people you love struggle to survive without the crutch of a drug to get them through the day. The song hits hard and we thought it’d be a perfect opener.

Dismantle Me

“Dismantle me” was the first song we released off of “Apparitions”. We picked this track because it collectively describes the tone of the EP. It features a little bit of everything you can expect from the EP and is one of our favorite tracks as well.

Cantigny

This song is the most personal to me (Justin) as its dedicated in memory of my grandfather. The name “Cantigny” comes from the name of the park that he always loved to go to and would spent a lot of his time at. Losing someone you love is something we think a lot of people can relate to.

Stranger In Flesh (Your Own)

Stranger is definitely a favorite of ours to play live as it has a lot going on instrumentally. It was was one of the first songs we wrote for the EP and has gone through a lot of changes and experimenting with different effect pedals. Lyrically it deals with the difficulties and insecurities mental illnesses create when trying to lead a secure and stable life.

Asphodel

This is definitely the softest track on the EP, but deals with probably the heaviest material. It’s about suicide, and the emotional havoc one deals with after someone you love and care about takes their own life.

Never Whole

With this being the final track on the EP, its ironically the first song we ever wrote as Commonweather. It’s been through probably about 3-4 different incarnations before it made it onto the EP and has turned into one of the most developed tracks we’ve ever written.
