With beautifully orchestrated arrangements anchored by haunting, almost hypnotic melodies, Canadian alt-rockers Wintersleep recently dropped the fresh new album ‘The Great Detachment.’ The collection delivers a welcome dose of atmospheric, entrancing alt-rock for which the band has become known. GroundSounds caught up with the guys to talk about their latest project, musical inspirations and more, check out the exclusive interview below.

For those just discovering Wintersleep, how did you guys meet and start making music?

Tim and I played music together throughout high school. We met Loel at a show in Halifax on January 1st of 2000. We all ended up living in Halifax in 2001 and started writing music together.

What made you guys decide on the band name Wintersleep?

Just a nice sound to it. Tim and I wrote a song called Hibernation and my girlfriend told me that the word translated to winterschlaf in German. Literally translated back into English its wintersleep. I think that was the first time I heard the word. We had a batch of songs that were pretty chill at the time and it seemed to fit well.

wintersleeptgdCan you tell us about working on and bringing your album The Great Detachment to fruition?

After finishing the Hello Hum tour with Frightened Rabbit in 2013, we just kinda chilled and gathered tunes together. We spent the summer and fall writing stuff and demoing as we went along. In 2014 we booked a couple tours and road tested a bunch of stuff. Then, 2014 late summer we recorded the further along stuff. We mixed with a few different people and took the best stuff from that.

Can you tell us about the writing and creative process involved with your track “Amerika?”

I had the original riff and melody and came across a poem called America, by walt Whitman. It has a really beautiful sentiment and some of the words sounded nice sung in the melody of the song. We recorded all live together in the same room because we wanted it to sound as chaotic as possible.. Probably the hardest song to mix. It was the first or second track we recorded I think?

You guys will be embarking on a select run of US tour dates in May, what do you enjoy most about being on the road?

Playing new tunes in these places will be alot of fun. We’re trying to make the set really new song heavy. It’s a different energy than what we normally do- we’re having a lot of fun.

What bands/musicians are you guys currently listening to?

War on Drugs, Holy Fuck, Dusted, Dilly Dally, Fake Palms, Walrus.

Now that the album is out, what can fans look forward to next?

We’re just starting to tour this record, so likely another Canadian tour.. Some Europe UK touring, and hopefully some more US stuff.. As much touring as possible really.
