SoCal based blues rockers Ford Madox Ford talk latest single “Expect It”

unnamed-14

The musical journey of Chip Kinman is one filled with enough legendary stories to fill one artist’s whole cache. It’s Kinman’s keen sense of challenging himself and norms, however, that has served him in seminal punk groups the Dils, Rank and File, and now his most recent, blues inspired outfit, Ford Madox Ford.

Styled FDMDXFD for short, the newly minted group has already made a mark in the greater Los Angeles scene, with their debut single, “Expect It,” offering the first tangible glimpse upon their powers. Groundsounds caught up with Kinman ahead of the single release and as FDMDXFD are amidst a weekly residency at The Redwood every Wednesday in May.

Hi, Ford Madox Ford congrats on “Expect It.” Could you tell our readers a little bit more on what the song is about?

It’s about collapse and the complete nothingness that follows. And if that’s not enough to give you the blues, Lord have mercy on your soul.

Chip, this is your first time stepping out with a band in years. What made you decide to start playing out again more formally?

Well, I found myself with something to say, and a way to say it. And I found the right band to say it with.

I think you’re the first band to occupy the punk-rocked-blues genre space. Where did that come from? How did you get into more of a blues sound?

Well, the punk rock part comes naturally. The blues is something I’ve never done before, and frankly, I wasn’t quite sure I could bring anything new because blues isn’t exactly known for innovation. But I found the key and, not surprisingly, the key is punk rock.

Screen Shot 2016-05-11 at 8.26.16 AM“Expect It” sounds like it was born out of a great Ford Madox Ford jam session. Is there truth to that? What’s your writing process like?

A little truth, yes! I get together with Dewey Peek, our guitar player, and we play the songs til it feels right, trusting our instincts to throw out the garbage.

What can fans “expect” at your upcoming residency gigs? Anything up your sleeve you’re at liberty to share?

Well, brother Tony, Number 1 Chief Rocker, will join us for a classic or two, and you can “expect” lots of guitar, lots of volume, lots of blues, and lots of fun.

Any tour plans for later in 2016?

Canada in July. Following that, USA and Europe.

What bands are coming up in Los Angeles, besides your own, that you could turn us onto?

The Katellas, Electric Children, Double E and the Drifter, Florida Mistakes… I’m sure there’s more, but that’s all I got.

Where can we get our copy of “Expect It”?

Apple music, iTunes, www.porterhouserecords.com, any record store that sells vinyl, and of course, at our shows. Bring cash!
