With energetic grooves and airy vocals, LA based quartet Rosechild are gearing up for their sophomore EP, it’s set to drop later this year. You can find traces of heavy 90’s alternative and psychedelic rock within these like-minded voyagers sounds. Their fresh new track “Good Enough” let’s it out and takes it all in at the same time, it’s a head nodding trip of sonic goodness and it has us anticipating their next release.
GroundSounds recently caught up with Rosechild to talk about their latest music, upcoming projects and more, check out the exclusive interview below.
For those just discovering Rosechild, how did you all meet and start making music?
Rosechild is kinda like a big family – You meet one cousin on your dads side and a year later you meet your second cousin on your moms side – it’s taken a couple years to get the crew together. I (Haile) first met Josh at the tail end of music school. We hung tight from the moment we met. After playing as a duo for a while we started reaching out to make a full band. Dan is the lucky gem from craigslist and Bruno was referred to me from a friend.
What made you guys decide on name Rosechild?
Josh and I played for a good year before coming up with a name. When we agreed on Rosechild it simply felt right. Rosechild is purity, innocence, truth, the things we’re scared of and the things that set us free. We’ve all been a kid once… a lot of what makes us who we are today is from the memories of being a child. A Rosechild sees the world as it is and everything it can be.
What do you guys enjoy most about Los Angeles?
I’d have to say all the different neighborhoods. You can be in a new place everyday if you want. We’re also surrounded by the beach, desert and mountains. What more can you ask for. This is a city that you hunt to find what you love. I love the fact that you can play in a new music venue just about every week if you wanted. Whether its a good venue is up for discussion though 😉
Can you tell us about the writing and creative process behind your fresh new track “Good Enough?”
‘Good Enough’ has been a beautiful process. We all knew the moment we played it together we couldn’t wait to play it again. It gave us confidence or maybe a sign for what’s ahead. A platform to reality… I started writing ‘Good Enough’ in my room. I had the verses and the bridge, but it was all out of order, didn’t know what I wanted to play first..I was just happy. I couldn’t wait to roller coaster the song with everyone. Good Enough is that deep breath that tells you everything is going to be alright. It’s the long drive you take to clear your mind. It’s the friend you let your fears out with. As humans we often contribute to the worlds issues simply because we are always wanting more. If you just stop and smile, what you’ve got is good enough.
Is there a “usual way” that you guys come up with tracks? How do you guys typically collaborate and come up with jams?
It changes all the time. Sometimes Josh will come in with a beautiful riff or one of us will have a some chords we’re rocking back n forth on or I’ll even have most of a song written and once in the studio we all take a piece and add a taste to it. Lately, we have been writing as a collective. The songs from those times really sound fulfilling.
What is it like on stage? How do you guys feel during a live show?
On stage is when it all comes alive. No more hiding behind closed doors. All those long nights practicing to be as precise as possible. The fire ignites for us all when we’re on stage. We like to give all we got. It’s all about bringing everyone together and in those moments it means everything. I sometimes think of it as the reality check from the so called connection we have in social media. It’s interesting when we haven’t seen each other all day and meet up for the show. Some of us have had lousy days and some great, so it makes it fun to watch each other switch on and share the feelings the songs are intended to.
What bands/musicians are you guys currently listening to?
It’s all over the place… Fink, Massive Attack, J. Cole, Thievery Corporation, The Novelists, Bloc Party, 21 Pilots, Good Tiger, This Town Needs Guns.
Can you tell us about working on your forthcoming EP? What can fans look forward to?
So far we feel pretty good about this upcoming EP. We’re a band that likes to do the recording and mixing ourselves. It allows us to get comfortable with the song and any last minute experimenting we see fit. For all the songs we have recorded them live – playing all together at once and are currently overdubbing vocals. It either takes us four takes to record a song and be stoked or about a hundred fifty. Josh (lead guitarist) is the bands engineer. The beauty of it being an inside job is the patience and purity in creating our sound and what we hope transcends. As for the fans, we’re really pushing it in the studio. The last four months have been so vital in this journey. I would say all of our weaknesses have come up and through that we choose to embrace it all. Everyone wants a groove, everyone wants to dance and we want that same thing. But we also want to give that intense and heavy drive. Kinda like the reasons and remedies are in the dance. To find them you have to lose yourself.
