PREMIERE: NJ dream-poppers Bern & The Brights share “Kingdoms”

unnamed

Sometimes you just need to zig up your zag. Montclair, NJ-based Bern & The Brights have been releasing great indie-pop rock with the traces of their musical union dating back to 2008.

The duo of Bernadette Malavarca and Catherine McGowan recently decided to follow the direction of influencers Tegan & Sara, incorporating more amplified, electronic elements to their emotionally powerful songwriting. Their new EP, Heart Wide Open, will be the first official foray into these new waters, with lead single, “Heart Wide Open,” just released.

While readying the extended player, Bern & The Brights also found time to participate in Speak Into My Good Eye’s 2nd Annual 24 Hour Songwriting Challenge. Groundsounds has the exclusive premiere of their submission, “Kingdoms,” below.

Written and recorded in just under a day, the duo manage to pen a slice shimmering, stark dream-pop that captures a moment in time with a band summiting a new frontier. You can stream Bern & The Brights’ “Kingdoms” below and look for it on sale October 16th as a part of a larger compilation with all proceeds going to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
