Harry Nagle on “The Ghost Of You”

“Well the song is from personal experience partly, starting with the deep emotional devastation of love that’s lost. Much like with a death of someone close, there is a point where initially you just can’t believe it. You’re in denial.

This song tells the story from the point of view of someone who stays completely stuck in that denial, so much that he “builds a lie” and recreates his lost love as imaginary character in his life. He tells himself “a story” and somehow gets his way. He knows he’s doing this but it makes him happy.

I find this kind of depiction of insanity from loss to be the ultimate in romanticism. “Wuthering Heights” and many gothic horror stories have this sense of complete loss as their driving force.”
