Featuring gritty rock and roll sounds with a soulful swagger, Reno based rockers Moondog Matinee, are gearing up for the release of their forthcoming sophomore album, ‘Carry Me, Rosie,’ due out August 25th.

GroundSounds recently caught up with the guys to talk about their latest project, musical inspirations and more, check out the exclusive interview below.

For those just discovering Moondog Matinee how did you guys form the band and start making music?

The band started as bands often do: a few friends in college getting together and jamming in someone’s basement. From there we began forming early songs based on the wide array of music we all had listened to. A few member changes later and a more focused idea of what we wanted our band to sound like, and we developed into the band we are today.

What made you guys decide on the name Moondog Matinee?

Several years ago, we had a show coming up, and after a slew of odd names that didn’t really work, we were in a scramble to find a new one. We sat together in a living room for several hours throwing ideas around; we scoured the internet and racked our brains to find any semblance of a name we could all agree on. Finally, after countless hours of searching through old records we enjoyed, we came across the aptly titled album by The Band, “Moondog Matinee.” We unanimously agreed on using that as our own name and have run with it ever since!

What do you guys enjoy most about Reno? What is one thing every visitor should see or do?

There are many great things about Reno. The people are fantastic, as we have some of the best friends and supporters we could ask for here. Lots of great restaurants and bars have sprung up in the area recently as well. Additionally, the weather is sunny most of the year, and with the exception of a few blistering hot days over summer and a handful of bone chilling days in the winter, the weather is pretty tame, and comfy year round. That being said, it’s hard not to tell any visitor to head up to Lake Tahoe, just about a half an hour away from Reno. There’s a reason it has the reputation it does.

Working on the album was such a fun process. We recorded much of the album over the course of a week in a cabin in the woods not too far from our home. It felt like music summer camp! We really wanted this record to have a live feel to it, which, for the most part, it is. Yet, a lot of the recording process was loose and experimental, and we also wanted those aspects to show up on the record as well. Hopefully others will experience those same sentiments listening to it that we intended while recording it.

How did you guys come up with the album title ‘Carry Me, Rosie’?

Rosie was the name of our beloved touring school bus. Though she may have broken down from time to time and created some real hassles for us, experienced by many a band on the road, the name just seemed an appropriate little love letter to our home away from home.

Can you tell us about the writing and creative process involved with “Put Me Right?”

This song was written as an homage to some of our favorite classic artists, both lyrically and musically. We aimed at giving it the nostalgia of a soulful Stones tune, with some of the layers of a glam-phase Bowie. As far as the lyrics go, it’s the true rock ‘n’ roll tale of a girl that has done somebody wrong.

What musicians/bands are you guys currently listening to?

Some of our modern favorites include bands such as My Morning Jacket, Dr. Dog, Wilco, J. Roddy Walston and the Business, and Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears.

Can you tell us about the inspiration for “Ghost Dime?”

It’s actually quite the literal title. Pete, our vocalist, was working in a bar a couple summers ago. For whatever reason, every night after he had closed the bar, swept, cleaned, etc., he would find a dime somewhere on the middle of the floor. We’ll never know how it got there, but we had a groove that seemed to fit the lyrics he came up with, and thus the song “Ghost Dime” was born!

After the album release what’s next for Moondog Matinee? What can fans look forward to?

We”ll be back at it in the studio to record a few new tracks hopefully later in the fall. After that, we’d love to continue touring as much as possible, hopefully expanding our markets and reaching new audiences with our live show!
