Toronto based trio Young Empires are one of the biggest rock bands currently emerging out of Canada. The synth-poppers haven’t really touched down too much yet stateside, but change is on the rise. With anticipation building, the band’s forthcoming LP is set to drop this fall.

GroundSounds recently caught up with the indie-rockers to discuss their latest projects, musical inspirations and more, check out the exclusive interview below.

For those just discovering Young Empires how did you guys come together and start making music?

We met in 2010 through mutual friends and a Craigslist post – we we were all coming off the backend of other musical projects.

What do you all enjoy most about Toronto? What is one ‘under the radar’ place that visitors should check out?

Toronto has an enormously diverse selection of restaurants  – and some of the best in the world. Oh, and the women are pretty beautiful.

Check out The Done Right Inn – small, unassuming bar, but has a great secret back patio – and $4 beers (in Canada, that’s cheap…)

Could you tell us about the writing and creative process involved with your track “The Gates?”

Like many of our songs, “The Gates”, was conceived out of a rhythm and a chant: “You’re not alone…”. We like to write with those two things at the forefront, as that’s how music has been made since the dawn of time.

You guys are currently on tour, what do you enjoy most about being on the road?

We just finished a tour of the Northeast USA. Being in a different city every night is exciting and refreshing. It’s really difficult to come off that and adjust to everyday life.

Can you tell us about the inspiration for “Sunshine?”

youngempiresblogpost2-846You guys are currently working on a new LP, what has it been like bringing this to fruition? Is there a release date?

Our LP has been finished since late 2014 – we’re eager for the world to hear it in its entirety – which will happen soon.

What bands/musicians are you guys currently listening to?

Bravestation, Foals, Jamie XX, Great Good Fine OK

Other than the upcoming LP, what else can fans look forward to?

We have a beautiful new music video for The Gates coming out in a couple of weeks.  We’re also working on an interactive web piece that should be ready top of 2016.
