Featuring laid-back melodies and tasty guitar licks New South Wales foursome Sea Legs are riding a wave of euphoric sounds, as they metaphorically surge through the coast with fresh new tracks. Their latest single “Witches Have Friends” is an infectious indie rock treat with a splash of pop goodness. With an expected sophomore EP to drop in October, GroundSounds caught up with Sea Legs to talk about their latest musical endeavors and more, check out the exclusive interview below.

For those just discovering Sea Legs, how did you guys form the band and start making music?

We all grew up together on the Central Coast as good mates, our families were all really good friends. Our fathers actually used to play in bands together, so I guess it was inevitable we would also end up playing in bands. We birthed Sea Legs in 2011, after 6 months of jamming in my living room, writing tunes and pissing off the neighbours.

How did you guys decide on the band name Sea Legs?

There is no deep and meaningful story for this unfortunately.. Most people assume it is because we all surf and have a love for the ocean, but the truth I was driving in my car (around the time of deciding on a band name), on my way to get a mixed Kebab, when our bassist said ‘what about Sea Legs?’

_D4N0405What do you guys enjoy most about New South Wales? What is one thing every visitor should see or do?

It would have to be the Beaches. We always make sure we throw in the boards when we tour NSW and surf our little tooshies off along the way. There are so many amazing spots to visit all along NSW coast.

Can you tell us about the writing and creative process involved with “Witches Have Friends?”

The chorus in Witches Have Friends is one that we stole from another one of our songs, a tune that we played live a little bit in 2013 but never did anything with. I liked the chorus so I wanted to write this song around it.. It all came together fairly seamlessly after we came up with that main guitar riff in the intro.

Could you tell us about working on your sophomore record and bringing it to fruition? Does it have a title/release date?

We have been working with a good friend of ours Josh Telford (Inhouse Sound) who has an amazing studio located at Mangrove Mountain NSW. He has worked with some of this industries big guns, and has also worked on some of our favorite Oz records. He really gets what we are trying to achieve with our music, and we are frothing on how it’s all coming together! The ETA for the release is October this year. It is still untitled at this point.

You guys recently announced a July/August tour with Jinja Safari, what do you enjoy most about being on the road?

Yeah we are pumped for these shows! The thing we enjoy the most about being on the road is the people we get to meet and the pals we make along the way. It’s bloody awesome to be traveling around the country with your mates playing music too!

11429915_979398278759690_7888004621000370593_nCould you tell us about the inspiration for the track “Christopher Strong?”

The song itself was inspired by my personal encounter with an elderly woman in the US in 1998, who actually turned out to be Hollywood star Katharine Hepburn from the Movie Christopher Strong.

What musicians/bands are you guys currently listening to?

Wolf Alice, #1 Dads, TV on the Radio, Mutemath, Lurch & Chief, Foals, Delta Riggs, Jinja Safari, LCD Soundsysytem, Joy Division.

We read that you guys surf a lot, what is the perfect wave?

For me it is a wedgey beach break around 2-3ft. When I think of my favorite wave I think of somewhere like Tuncurry Breakwall in NSW. There’s a left hand reef break at home that I grew up surfing that not too many people surf as it is a 30min walk to get there. On it’s day it is unbelievable! 😉

After the tour what’s next for Sea Legs? What can fans look forward to?

After the tour we will be finalising the record and getting it ready for release and we also have more exciting tour news we will be dropping soon for Sept/Oct! #Yeeew
