Featuring 80’s pop-oriented sounds, clean vocals and uplifting vibes, Belfast based indie-pop band Go Wolf are full of style and charisma.  The band recently released their infectious rhythmic tunes on their new EP ‘Running,‘ featuring four fresh new tracks it is pure sonic goodness.

GroundSounds recently caught up with Go Wolf to talk about their latest project, musical inspirations and more check out the exclusive interview below.

For those just discovering Go Wolf, could you tell us about forming the band and a little bit about the night you guys initially met at a poetry event?

Chris (bass) and Scott (vox) did indeed meet at a poetry reading. Scott was reading a piece that Chris liked. We got to talking about music and decided there and then to work together. Steve came along when we needed a drummer for the live show, but he’s an integral part of the band now.

What made you guys decide on the band name Go Wolf?

It came to me in a dream.

What do you guys enjoy most about Belfast? What is one thing every visitor should see or do?

You’re never far away from somewhere great to eat; visitors should try out a restaurant called Hadskis. They should avoid the official bus-tour and drive to the north coast, it is the one thing about northern Ireland that lives up to the hype, with some beautiful views and beaches.

What is it about the indie-pop disco-tinged sound that attracts you to it?

I don’t think we were attracted to a specific sound that we decided to adopt, rather it is the result of what we are collectively exposed to; other music, art etc. Writing music is such a learning curve and I feel that we are only scratching the surface of what GO WOLF could sound like. We’re continually evolving our sound and hopefully the next releases will be more nuanced and sound exactly how they do in our head.

How does music make you feel?

That’s a hard question to answer, it makes me feel different things at different times. I guess the wonderful thing about music is its potential to provoke different emotions; love, anger, joy, happiness, sadness. Hopefully GO WOLF is multi-dimensional in the same way.

Screen Shot 2015-05-18 at 9.14.34 AMWhat was the inspiration for the track “Running?”

A confluence of romantic experiences but not about one person in particular – I guess it tracks the presence or absence of honesty and trust in those relationships; how the start and end of a romance can mirror each other in terms of vulnerability.

Could you tell us about bringing your latest EP Running to fruition? What was it like working on this project?

Well there was perhaps more pressure to deliver something; I don’t think any band experiences the same artistic freedom as they do on the first songs they ever work on. Having said that, working with our producer Rocky again lent a continuity and speed to the writing process. The artwork was from another friend we’ve worked with before, Talley Carlston.

When you guys aren’t working on music, what do you enjoy in your spare time?

We’re an eclectic bunch. Steve has probably the most interesting hobby, woodworking. He’s actually really good, and sells beautiful chopping and serving boards (least rock n’ roll sentence ever!) He also built the snare drum that he plays live from scratch.

Could you tell us about the creative and writing process for the track “Friction?”

The track is a relatively old one. Lyrically it imagines a romantic relationship against the backdrop of conflict. Muscially, we just wanted to showcase the two sides to GO WOLF – moody dancefloor-ready verses, and uplifting, positive choruses. I always start with the beat, just putting samples together in logic until something clicks. Then the rest of the band get in on the action and help turn it into a song.

What is next for Go Wolf? What can fans look forward to?

We’re currently finishing a new batch of songs that we’re really excited to let people hear – a slight change of direction, both more electronic and anthemic. In terms of shows, we play Celtronic festival in Derry on June 27th and Stendhal Festival on August 8th.
