LA based electronically infused, alt/dark pop artist LACES is the new project of Jessie Poland, formerly known as Charlotte Sometimes.

Collaborating with fresh up-and-coming DJs and producers, Poland has reinvented herself with a fresh new edge. The somber songstress recently hit us with the hauntingly powerful new track “Love Me Sober,” the first single to drop from LACES’ upcoming EP, due out in June. It’s a moody synth-pop number with big beats and powerful chords. With more music on the way, GroundSounds recently caught up with LACES to find out what excactly makes her tick, check out the exclusive interview below.

For those just discovering LACES, can you tell us a little bit about your background and how you got started with music?

I’ve always been in some form of entertainment my whole life. Most people if they know of me heard my music when I was using the moniker Charlotte Sometimes. I’ve been signed, toured, a professional songwriter, and that sassy girl on The Voice.

Can you tell us about the transition from Charlotte Sometimes to LACES? What was the motivation behind the new moniker?

I think Charlotte Sometimes represents the youth of my life and LACES embodies the woman I’ve become. It was time to shed who I was and make room for the artist and person I was becoming in my adult life.

“Love Me Sober” was a very therapeutic song for me. I was going through some troubling relationship woes and when I write music that’s how I find out how I am relating to my life struggles. It was very eye opening. Plus it was a ton of fun to work with Dante.

What was it like working with producer Dante Jones?

Dante is the best! He’s hilarious and allows room to play in his writing sessions. You are a free to be as artistic as you’d like to be. He lets me wave my freak flag and I’m a total weirdo!

What was it like appearing on NBC’s The Voice? Could you tell us about this experience ?

The Voice was a super fun and exciting chapter in my life. It also doesn’t feel like it happened. It was a very surreal experience.

When you are performing on stage, what typically goes through your mind? What do you feel?

It is only when I am on stage that I truly feel comfortable in my skin, so it’s almost spiritual for me. I feel like I can finally share my truth and make peace with myself. Oh and I love to entertain, so give me a stage and I’ll try to light it up.

What DJs/producers would you like to work with in the future?

Good question! I have always been open to working with almost anyone! If they make me uncomfortable… even better! I would love to work with Zedd, Chris Walla, and Jon Brion though!

What is it about the dark/electro alt-pop sound that attracts you to it?

I think alternative music and especially moody music has been the soundtrack to my life. It’s a natural progression for me to find my voice within the genre.

What’s next for LACES? What can fans look forward to?

A new single and an EP out in June. Plus a show! But stay tuned and buckle up, because I have no idea, but I know it’s gonna be wild and fun!
