Folly Rae is building a huge buzz in the UK leading up to her new EP Run For Cover on March 16th. GroundSounds caught up with Folly to discuss the songs she’s already released, the EP, her hometown of Hertfordshire, and more. Check out the interview below, along with a stream of “Someone I Don’t Know” and the official video for “Run For Cover.” Be sure to follow her on Twitter and Facebook for more leading up to the EP!
When did you make the transition from dancing to music – was there a specific moment you knew you wanted to pursue music?
It was a quick split decision at the age of 17 between dance college (which I had trained my whole life for) or music. I just up and left. Looking back at it now, it was a bold, silly move, but it paid off.
Can you tell us about how “Someone I Don’t Know” came together and the inspiration for it?
This song sat without a chorus for about a year. A few days before finishing the EP we decided to re-visit this song and the chorus came instantly. It’s about subconsciously having feelings for someone, without realizing it.
The “Run For Cover” video is intriguing and well-done. Who did you enlist to film it and where did the concept come from?
Thank you 🙂 A friend Calum Creasy has a company with his girlfriend called StokedEverSince. They are amazingly talented and creative people.
The concept came from the idea of me not knowing who or what my songs are about until the song is finished. Looking back at a song, I see clearly how I felt, but at the time, I seemed unaware.
So we wanted a concept that made the viewer come to their own conclusion about what the song/video is about, just using how they feel.
The tracks we’ve heard have us really excited for the EP. How long have you been working on the songs?
The songs were finished last October at Sticky Studios, but were written throughout the year.
Do you have a favorite or go-to spot when you write your songs?
I write in other peoples studios mainly, but I always take the song home sit in my bed and finish the lyrics off.
Where is the best place to stay updated with you online?
Twitter 🙂 @follyrae
Who were some of your musical heroes/icons growing up?
Country and Motown music was always on the record player in my house and I loved watching ‘top of the pops’ when I was a kid.
I discovered Joni Mitchell and Sia around the age of 17 they inspired me to pursue music.
For those of us in the States who aren’t familiar with Hertfordshire, tell us a little bit about it and what it’s like for a musician.
It’s a little town in the countryside just north of London, with a non-existent live scene and everybody practically knows everyone business. It’s very quiet and there’s always a beautiful spot to go songwriting. But, London is where I spend most my time now.
What are your plans for the Spring & Summer?
Spring I will be tucked away writing and Summer is festival time!
