Life Of Dillon Interview

London trio Life Of Dillon have turned a nearly decade-long friendship into a promising new musical endeavor. Their debut track “Overload” has created a huge buzz and they are prepping their new EP Prologue for a release April 14. GroundSounds caught up with the guys to discuss their formation, “Overload,” the EP & more. Check it out below and stream the addicting track “Overload.”

I’d love to hear the story of how you formed the band. Tell us a little bit about your time with Dillon and how that interaction impacted you.

Joe: David and I have been friends for about 8 years. We met in secondary school and right from the jump we started making music and gigging locally. I introduced him to Robert that same year and ever since we’ve been making music. We wanted to be writers for other people initially and never really thought about being a band until about a few months ago after we met Dillon. We were coming from London where everyone is always working and getting caught in the rat race and on the other side of the world was this guy just chilling out, without a care in the world. We felt that vibe really matched a lot of the music we were making and it helped us to channel that into some of the newer songs too. The band sort of just formed organically from that point when we started getting some attention and the rest is history.

“Overload” is such a refreshing track; we’ve been playing it on repeat. How did the song come together and what inspired it?

David: When we made Overload we weren’t trying to make a hit or anything like that, it was just something we were doing for fun. We recorded it at home in our little make-shift studio and did it in one day. We wrote it from the perspective of someone talking to themselves, and realizing they want to do something different, break a cycle they might be caught up in and feeling helpless to this feeling. That’s the point at which you start ‘overloading’.

Tell us about the new EP. How long have you been working on the songs? Do you know when it’ll be released?

Robert: The EP is called ‘Prologue’ and will be coming out April 14th. It’s got five songs and they’re all feel-good fun tracks with an organic sound and real instruments. We called it Prologue because this is the beginning of our journey and and hopefully it’s gonna be a good one! It’s also the first time anyone’s hearing anything of ours. The songs were made over the last year or so.

How did you get connected with Disruptor Records? You guys are the pioneers now for this venture – how has the experience been so far?

Joe: It feels amazing to be the flagship artist for Disruptor records. We definitely feel lucky to be in a position like this. So before anything had happened we were pretty desperate to get out there and network. My mum had put a roof over our heads and had supported all three of us for a while but it got to a point where she was like, get a real job or get out because we weren’t getting anywhere as writers/producers. The pressure to make something happen was a blessing in disguise because at that point we began reaching out to different managers, one of whom was Adam Alpert. We were only looking for management to help guide us and we had no clue that he had just started Disruptor records. So after talking for a month or so he flew down to London to meet us and we all felt it was a great opportunity that we couldn’t afford to not take.

What are your goals for Life Of Dillon? Do you have clearly defined goals or do you focus more on the present?

David: To be honest things have been happening so fast it’s been hard to define our goals. One minute we were in London making songs and now we are in America doing radio interviews, and meeting a million different people and working on our live set. But if I had to say now, I think we would want to start performing soon, doing tours, and really being able to share our music with the world. All the glamorous stuff that comes with this isn’t what we’re in it for. That stuff is great but what we really love is making music and we just want to share it with as many people as possible.

Where is the best place to stay updated with you online?

Robert: Probably the best place to keep up with us is all the main social media channels: Twitter, Facebook, Vine, Instagram and definitely Snapchat, all @ lifeofdillon.

What are your plans for this Spring & Summer?

Joe: I’m not sure what exactly is going to happen in Spring and Summer. Perhaps we’ll be doing shows by that time but who can say? I wouldn’t have been able to guess we’d be here six months ago, so projecting the next few months can be difficult. What I do know is that our EP is coming out in April and soon after we will drop our album and hopefully from there we will really be out there and able to connect with our fans. I think the music will open up a lot of opportunities and we will be travelling a lot and potentially moving to the US as well!

For those of us who haven’t been to London, what are a couple things we absolutely must do if we visit?

David: You must have fish and chips in a local chip shop! This is very very important lol. Everybody has to check out Notting Hill Carnival! This is so much fun and once a year, one of the biggest events in Europe. And don’t forget your rain coat just in case!
