Sydney’s Au.Ra, a duo composed of Tim Jenkins and Tom Crandles are on the verge of releasing Jane’s Lament, a new full-length album tinged with droning guitars and looped drum beats.  The album will be released  on March 3 via Felte, but before it drops GroundSounds caught up with Au.Ra to talk about their upcoming project, musical inspirations and more, check out the exclusive interview below.

For those just discovering Au.Ra could you tell us about how you two came together and started making music?

Tim and I first met when we both showed up to the wrong classroom on our first day of audio school. We were both in the process of leaving other bands and decided to make some music together.

What made you guys decide on the moniker Au.Ra?

It was one of a few names we were throwing around. I remember we agreed to it on a couch at 301 studios during our first attempt at recording our songs. It seemed to be the one we mutually agreed on most.

Can you tell us about the writing and creative process for your track “Talk Show?”

It was very natural. Started off with the riff/chords and melody then through collaboration it grew from there. We incorporated one of our favourite drummers James west on this one too. He nailed it.

What do you enjoy most about Sydney? What is one thing every visitor should see or do?

Well, Sydney hasn’t really won me over from this visit. Venues are closing so it’s getting harder to see good music and they lock us all out of bars after one o’clock so aside from the natural beauty of the city I enjoy my friends and family most. I suggest every visitor hangs out with them.

1417552555FLT021_FRONT_1500xcopyCould you tell us a little bit about the process involved with bringing your upcoming full-length Jane’s Lament to fruition? How has it been working on this project?

It’s been very sporadic. We first started on it about three years ago. Three different recording sessions. Two in Syd and one in London. We tried to fill in the gaps in my bedroom with tracks like Juki and Width.

What is it about shimmering guitar riffs and looping drum beats that speak to you guys?

We haven’t entirely worked this one out yet.

What was the inspiration for your track “Morning?”

We came up with that one through an improvised jam we had. We took a pretty loose idea to the studio and moulded it into what it is now. It came at as one of the strongest.

What music are you guys currently listening to?

At the moment I’ve had:

Wesley matsell  –  total Order of being

Burial.  –   Untrue

Lfo –   Sheath

on repeat and Tim :

Oren Ambarchi – Quixotism

Okkyung Lee – Noisy Love Songs

Missing Brazilians – Warzone

How do you guys prepare for a performance and what typically goes through your mind when you’re on stage?

We have only ever play three shows. Our pre gig preperation is generally the stress of figuring out who’s gear we can borrow for the show so generally once we get Onstage We have a pretty clear mind after all that. No thoughts really get in the way.

After the album release what’s next for Au.Ra? What can fans look forward to?

Another album!
