Together LA based duo Rachael Cantu and Harlan Silverman form Little Brutes. Featuring catchy guitar arrangements, vibrant vocals and upbeat instrumentation the pair are making moves in a big way. Their latest ‘Desire‘ EP is an indie-pop delight that left us wanting more, all the while wondering what’s next? So, we decided to find out.

GroundSounds recently caught up with Rachael to talk about Little Brutes latest project, new music and more, check out the exclusive interview below.

For those just discovering Little Brutes, can you tell us about how you two met and started making music together?

We met at a local show we were both playing. I think it was Tangiers (now defunct). Then I stole him to play guitar for me. Writing together came really organically after that.

What made you guys decide on the moniker Little Brutes?

I had it written down in a notebook for a long time, wanting to use it as a lyric at some point. I personally like it because it’s tough and sweet.

We have had “Make Our Own Way” on repeat! Can you tell us about the creative and writing process for this track?

Nice! Thanks! I’ve always been inspired by the mindset that you can create your own destiny. I fully believe that. Once I came up with the lyrics “make our own way”, the rest fell into place quickly after that. I just went with that sentiment.

You guys have been in the music industry for a good time, what has been some of your fondest memories?

One of our fondest memories was being on tour with BB King. He was so gracious and welcoming. On one of our days off, we decided to visit the Civil Rights Museum in Birmingham. It’s obviously a very important part of history to reflect on and learn from, but it was even more powerful to walk through the museum knowing that we were on tour with someone that has lived through it and was affected by all of that.

10013955_804375366289302_7782412714627000409_nCan you tell us about the Desire EP? What were the most challenging and rewarding parts in bringing it all together?

To be honest, it was all rewarding. It wasn’t even really planned to be a thing. I think we followed through with it because it came so easy. We wrote one song – liked it – so we decided to write another, and so on. It was a super rewarding process for me. I’ve wanted to write pop songs for a long time and it was a breath of fresh air for me, musically. I also just love writing with Harlan, it comes very naturally to us.

Can you tell us about the inspiration for “Carefully?”

Dancing about love. Dancing around love. I’ve always wished I could dance.

Can you tell us about your involvement with the organization Songs for Kids?

I met Josh Rifkind (founder of Songs for Kids) at a mutual friends show at The Wiltern (in Los Angeles). He explained what Songs For Kids was all about, and I pretty much begged him to let me tag along to a session. I showed up the very next day to one of the hospitals that they play at and never left. That was a little over 2 years ago. I get to sing fun songs, bounce around and make kids smile. It’s the best way to spend a day.

What music/tunes do you guys currently have on rotation?

Last listens: Future Islands, Miguel, James Blake, Operation Ivy, Sylvan Esso, Lorde…and any modern day pop song that I need to learn for the kids.

2015 is just getting started, what can fans expect/look forward too from Little Brutes for the rest of the year? What’s next?

We’re going to do the best we can to spread the word of our new EP, get as many ears on this record, release a couple music videos, look into releasing the EP on vinyl (something I’ve always wanted to do)…and probably write some more songs!
