Together Mark Solomich and Erik Ratensperger form Brooklyn based band Junior Prom. The two have united to create fresh musical interplay the makes you want to dance. Since teaming up in 2012, they’ve released a self-titled EP and they are currently working on a debut LP. GroundSounds recently caught up with the pair to about their musical endeavors and more, check out the exclusive interview below.

We read that you guys met through a mutual friend while moving in NYC, after the introduction, what was it like the first time you guys jammed together? Was there an instant musical chemistry?

MARK: I don’t know how Brad felt the first time he laid eyes on Angelina but I imagine it was a lot like I did the first time I saw Erik. Birds started to sing, the clouds seem to part. I knew that from that moment on I’d be driving around with this man in a 15 passenger van for a long time to come.

What do you guys enjoy most about Brooklyn? What is one thing every visitor should see or do?

Mark: Brooklyn is a treasure trove of wonderful little places to discover. There’s a lovely furniture shop called  IKEA in Gowanus not too far from where I live. And if you’re into coffee, there’s a great artisanal spot named Dunkin Donuts that just opened up in Williamsburg not far from where we rehearse. So much to do, I’m on my way to Home Depot now!

Screen Shot 2015-01-12 at 10.05.13 AMCan you tell is about the creative and writing process for “Cheap Thrills?”

Mark: “Cheap Thrills” was an instrumental idea we had laying around and one day in the middle of making our album we decided to dust it off and it came together very quickly after that, thankfully.

What is it about electro-pop that attracts you guys to this sound?

Mark: I don’t really think about it in that way. We just try to write great songs and we’ll use all kinds of elements, be they acoustic or electronic, to achieve the sound.

Were you guys surprised by the success of “Sheila Put Your Knife Down?” Where did the inspiration for this track stem from?

Mark: We were surprised because ultimately it was a demo we made in my kitchen. But then I did have a feeling it would do something because I recorded a clean version at the same time.

It was inspired by a woman trying to stab me. Albeit, her name was not Sheila.

You guys were recently on tour, what do you enjoy most about being on the road?

Mark: Winning over new fans every night, it really never gets old. We just love to be on stage and entertain a big room full of people. We’re really just big hams at the end of the day.

What musicians/bands are currently inspiring you guys?

Mark: I like the Charli XCX record and Jessie Ware’s new album quite a bit.

When you guys are performing on stage what goes through your mind and what are feeling?

Mark: You can do it buddy! You’re good enough and doggone it, people like you!!!

What can you guys reveal about your upcoming full-length? What can fans look forward to?

Mark: We are putting the finishing touches on it as I type. I think y’all are in for a real treat, if I may be so bold.
