Jacquie Lee Interview

Jacquie Lee has done quite a lot in a short amount of time. She went on the hit show The Voice, appeared on the TODAY show, and has an EP out on Atlantic Records. GroundSounds caught up with Jacquie to find out how she started, her thoughts on all those experiences, and what’s on tap for 2015. Check out the interview below and watch her video for “Broken Ones.”

How did you get started in music? Was there a specific moment that you realized this was what you wanted to pursue?

I’ve been singing almost all my life and from the first time I performed in Mulan at a school play I realized this was what I was meant to do.

Tell us about your song “Broken Ones.” What inspired the track and how did it come together?

“Broken Ones” is a song about vulnerability and strength.  It’s a powerful message that really resonated with me when I first heard it.  I had the opportunity to return to The Voice to sing an original song in May earlier this year and I had been songwriting and recording and we found this song and it just felt right.

Everyone that has heard the song comments on how powerful your vocal performance is. How do you develop your singing voice? Did you take any vocal coaching or was this more of a natural gift?

Thank you so much!  Before very recently I never had any vocal lessons.  I feel very lucky and blessed to have a strong singing voice and I never take it for granted!

What was the best and worst part about being on The Voice?

Well, it was kind of a sink or swim experience and that was kind of scary but it made me work harder.  The best part was the great friends I made.

From your time with her, give us a ‘behind the scenes’ view on something that people wouldn’t know about Christina Aguilera.

xtina is extremely intelligent and being able to not only hear her sing, but also talk was a treat. Behind the scenes the room would go silent from just a simple humm from her… She was that good.

Tell us about your experience on the TODAY show. We often hear how awkward and uncomfortable those shows can be for a musician, but you stepped up and performed like it was the closing song of a live set. What was your experience there like?

It was amazing to perform on the Today Show! They were so kind to me and I was thrilled to perform where so many of my musical heroes have performed before me.  I put in a lot of practice time beforehand with my band and they were amazing and we just worked really hard to make sure it was the best performance possible – I’m so glad you liked it!

Your EP is out now on Atlantic Records/300 Entertainment, which is a huge dream label for most musicians. How has your time with them been so far?

It’s a dream label for sure.  It’s mind blowing to be on the same label that signed classic artists like Led Zeppelin and Aretha Franklin and to be label mates with great artists like Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Christina Perri and Paramore.  Everyone is so talented and engaged it’s been incredible.

What’s on tap for you in 2015? Where is the best place for readers to stay updated with you online?

I’m writing and looking forward to releasing a full length album in 2015.  I am also working on a tour and excited for the release of my next single “Tears Fall!”  I am pretty active on Twitter and Instagram so please follow me there!

Where do you go when you need to get away or need a break?

I would probably say to my bedroom to watch some Netflix! It’s my escape.

If you could play one location with one other artist, where would you perform and who would you bring with you?

I would say Madison Square Garden with Ed Sheeran and I would bring my parents!
