Featuring tempered harmonies with dynamic instrumentation, alt/rock duo Polaris Rose (Peter Anthony and Madelynn Elyse) are creating unique and experimental tracks that have caught our earbuds.

With the recent release of their debut album ‘Telescopes,‘ it has become apparent that this songwriting/producing duo compliment each other impeccably. GroundSounds recently caught up with the pair to talk about their latest project, musical inspirations and more! Check out the exclusive interview below.

For those just discovering Polaris Rose can you tell us about how you two came together and started making music?

Maddie and I (Peter) met in Boston.  At the time, we were both really active in our own bands… when we met, it was a bit like a thunderclap in our lives.  Four months later we moved to Los Angeles and have been working on music ever since.

How did you guys decide on the name Polaris Rose?

When we decided to start a project as a duo, we had a list of songs that we loved that all had a common thread throughout them.  We took the title of one song, “Polaris” and tweaked it to get our name.  Actually, we renamed the song ‘Polaris’ to the song ‘Telescopes’.

We produced the album ourselves… and to get ourselves to the point where we were happy, we spend a lot of time.  We demoed over 30 songs for the record before cutting it down to its final 10.  That demo stage was – I think – certainly the toughest part.

What is it about alternative rock that attracts you two to this sound?

We love music with a lot of energy.  We also love progressive rock/jazz and melody… so the genre is really right up our alley.  Although, we are finding that using the genre name ‘alt rock’ means different things to different people.  I’m not sure if we even know what alternative rock means anymore.

What do you guys enjoy most about LA? What is one thing every visitor should see or do that only locals know about?

We love the crazy music scene of LA.  Some people hate the politics and the perceived ‘fakeness’ of it, but we think of it as a wild adventure.

Can you tell us about the creative and writing process for “Perfect View”?

“Perfect View” was one of the first songs we wrote upon reaching LA.  It is a special song to us because we allowed the lyrics to be very straight-forward.  It was a transformational point in our lives and the song captures our optimism and spirit at the time.

unnamed-4What inspired the track “Cityscapes”?

For “Cityscapes” we looked back on our time in Boston and how it was to be in a cold city, walking about (we did a lot of that) and dreaming big.  This song has a certain theme to it that is repeated over the course of “Telescopes”… it’s about searching for your dreams and finding them unattainable.

When you guys are on stage performing what do you feel? What goes through your mind?

We rehearse a lot.  Every night, in fact.  We do this so that the playing can be second nature and our major focus is on the audience.  We don’t do a lot of the silly stage antics that get crowds going, but we do try to engage.

What’s next for Polaris Rose? What can fans look forward to in the future?

That’s a good question.  We have more music to share from ‘Telescopes’.  We will be performing more around the Los Angeles area and we have been making plans for some adventures around the USA.  The only other thing I can say is, we are about to start another batch of 30 demoes.  So another album is already in the works.
